Flake vs. Metallic Epoxy Floors: Which Look Is Right for Your Garage?
Both flake and metallic epoxy floors look great, but they serve different goals. Here's how to decide which finish fits your space.
Once you've decided on epoxy flooring, the next question is usually about looks: flake or metallic? Both are popular finishes we install throughout Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, but they're built differently and suit different spaces.
Flake Epoxy: Practical and Popular
Full-broadcast flake epoxy embeds decorative color chips into a pigmented base coat, then seals everything under a clear top coat. It's our most requested residential finish, largely because it's practical as much as it is decorative.
Strengths:
- Hides dirt, dust, and tire marks between cleanings
- Adds slip resistance from the texture of the chips
- Wide range of color blends to match any garage or basement
- Excellent value for the durability you get
Metallic Epoxy: A Showpiece Finish
Metallic epoxy uses pigments suspended in the resin that move and pool as the coating cures, creating a three-dimensional, marbled look. Every metallic floor is unique — no two pours look exactly the same.
Strengths:
- Dramatic, high-end visual impact
- Works beautifully in showcase garages, home bars, and finished basements
- Depth and shine that flake systems don't replicate
Trade-offs:
- More specialized application process, which typically costs more
- Some natural variation in the final pattern — this is a feature, not a flaw, but it does mean less predictability than a flake blend
Which One Should You Choose?
If your garage is a workspace first and a showpiece second — tools, vehicles, storage — flake epoxy gives you the best combination of looks and practicality. If you're finishing a space meant to impress, like a display garage, home theater, or basement bar, metallic epoxy is worth the extra investment.
Can You Combine Them?
Yes — some homeowners choose a metallic accent area (like a garage entryway or a basement bar floor) paired with flake in the main working space. We can talk through layout options at your estimate.
